How to Stay on Track with Your Health Goals This Silly Season
With the silly season fast approaching, there is no time like the present to get your rehab and fitness routine in line and stay on track with your health goals. Whether it’s wedding season or the endless Christmas parties and catch ups, now is not the time to let your health take a back seat. Instead of putting off your health until the New Year, and setting yet another new year’s resolution, why not start creating healthy habits now and put in place a plan/program to stay on track.
1. Set a realistic goal
Think about something you’d like to achieve in the last two months of 2022 and beyond into 2023. Now ask yourself, is this something I really want? If the answers yes and you’ve got something in mind, then you need to be SMART about it. This means your goals needs to be:
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Relevant
T – Time based
2. Prepare and plan
We’ve all heard the saying “fail to prepare then prepare to fail” and it’s never been more appropriate in this instance. You need to PREPARE yourself and know when you will be busier so you can keep yourself on track. You need to PLAN and map out the upcoming events so you can schedule rehab/workouts and meal prep around this.
3. Learn to say NO!
While it’s tempting to say yes to every invite, beer and cocktail that comes your way, saying NO will allow yourself to stay on track with your goals. Saying NO sometimes, means that you can say YES to the things you really want. By learning to say no you will be able to find a balance between indulging yourself and working towards your goals.
4. Enlist the help of a friend
Find a friend to work out with. Try joining one of our duo or small group pilates and/or rehabilitation classes with a friend to keep you accountable while making things fun.
5. Seek advice
If you’re still not sure where to start, why not visit the team today. Your EP, Physiotherapist, Osteopath or Myotherapist can help you identify a goal and implement a plan to keep you on track to doing the things you love and staying on track!
The WHL Team Secret Tips to stay on track with health goals
If all else fails, the team have put together a list of their top secret tips to help keep you motivated:
Sam:
- Try to make them apart of everyday life so it doesn’t seem rushed and overwhelming, scheduling all sessions at the start of the week or putting it in your diary – even if it’s as simple as 15mins of stretching
- Wake up early
- Missing one day isn’t the end of the world and doesn’t mean you need to start from day 0, mental and physical rest days are just as important as active days
Jordan:
- Prepare all your clothes the evening prior if you are going to do morning workouts
- Prepare/know ahead of time what you will be doing
- Expect setbacks as they almost always happen
Jess:
- Workout with a friend
- Create a motivating playlist
Liz:
- Start small and build your way up
- Find a way to enjoy the process and not just what the end result will be
Rachel:
- Understand why your rehabbing; Ask your physio why you’re doing what you’re doing for context
- Join a class i.e group, and work with others
- Have a goal to work towards eg running a marathon or doing a pull up
- Have an easy test to monitor progress = see improvements, stay motivated
Tom:
- Put up post-it notes on a mirror that you use daily
- Write a reminder of your end goal to reinforce your WHY and motivate you in your training/rehab session
Shane:
- Fuel correctly, you don’t put bad fuel in a sports car
- Keeps things simple stupid, if you over complicate things you’re likely to get stressed and fall off the wagon
- Try not to speed it up too much, sometimes slow and steady wins the race when it comes to recovery
Alana:
- Trust the process. Years of bad habits won’t be reversed in one session but if you follow the plan given to you by your therapist/coach the more successful you will be
